Guess who’s back? Back again…
(How many times can I make that terrible joke?)
I’ve had a little break from blogging over most of December – mainly for my sanity, but also because I ended up with the mother of all colds, which left me looking and feeling like an extra from The Walking Dead. While I’m still sniffling into January, I’m excited to get back to obsessing over beauty – especially with a whole new year of releases to look forward to.
While we wait for our favourite brands to drop some 2018 goodness, I thought I’d round up everything that I loved and used/abused in 2017 – most of these will have been mentioned in various monthly lineups, but here’s my absolute best-of-the-best list for the past year (2017 already seems so long ago…)
Marc Jacobs O!Mega Coconut Bronzer in Tan-tastic
This list isn’t in any particular order, but if it was, this delightful concoction would be my #1. I’m not a bronzer person – my skin is a ghostly pale shade, so I avoid anything vaguely orange or sun-kissed like the plague. Earlier in 2017, this giant bronzer from Marc Jacobs was doing the rounds on YouTube, and (eventually) I became incredibly intrigued by a bronzing powder that appeared so natural and subtle. It wasn’t until I tried it on in store (at the Harrods counter, no less) that I was fixated, and convinced that this bronzer would solve all my problems.
Alas, it was also hideously expensive and hard to justify. So, you can only imagine my joy and surprise when my angel boyfriend bought me one for my 22nd birthday (!!!). It’s a truly beautiful product that for me, lives up to all the hype – I was addicted during the summer and undoubtedly will continue to be addicted well into 2018. It’s not cheap (hence why I couldn’t bring myself to buy it), but it is gorgeous, generously-sized, with a giant mirror compact perfect for travelling.
Glossier Boy Brow in Brown
2017 was full of huge and wild launches – perhaps my favourite (and one of the most hyped) was the arrival of Glossier in the UK. I’d been dreaming of getting my hands on some of their stuff for months, so when they finally made the transatlantic jump in October I filled my shopping cart faster than you could say “Milky Jelly Cleanser”. Not only is their website terribly pretty, they throw in loads of cool stickers and samples with their orders, and ship directly from a UK warehouse (so no horrible customs fees!).
Top of my shopping list was Boy Brow – possibly Glossier’s most cult product, which is no surprise considering everyone’s current brow obsession. It’s a tinted gel (that also comes in clear) with an itty bitty spoolie applicator to help you groom, fill and set your brows. I love it – it’s easy to use, non-crispy and completely budge-proof. There aren’t many shades, but I reckon they’re fairly universal across most brow colours. If you try anything from Glossier in 2018, make it this.
The Ordinary 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil (and just oils in general)
I’m hooked on skincare oils – the concept of slathering my already oily and greasy skin in even more of it might seem counterintuitive, but now I’m totally sold on it. This oil, in particular, is incredibly affordable (a generous and long-lasting 30ml) and superb quality, and claims to reduce the signs of photo-ageing (from UV damage) and fade scarring. The MONU Fiji Facial Firming Oil has also been a total gem this year, and I have an untouched bottle of Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate ready to try out in 2018 (fingers crossed!).
Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser
Glossier strikes again! Possibly their best-selling skincare product, the MJC (yes, I’ve made my own super-cool acronym) provides a really gentle but effective cleanse without stripping the skin at all. While it doesn’t quite get rid of all my mascara, it manages to melt the rest of my makeup down (although I do follow with a second cleanse anyway to make sure everything is gone). It smells like roses too, which I know is not for everyone, but I love it (so boo to your wrong opinions). Definitely making an urgent repurchase once I empty this bottle.
Maybelline Colossal Big Shot Mascara
What a name. What a tube. I honestly didn’t shut up about this mascara in 2017 – it featured in favourites, and even had its own dedicated post. This is all with good reason, of course – it’s a bloody great mascara, in a snazzy metallic yellow tube that hides the lash magic within. The wand is hefty and bristly, and the formula gives the perfect combination of volume, separation and length (the stuff of mascara dreams). I haven’t repurchased it yet (gotta get through my 5 million other mascaras), but it will be top of my shopping list when the time comes.
Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Champagne Pop
2017 was the year I finally got my paws on this legendary collab (between Jaclyn Hill, of course, and Becca). I say this a fair amount, but believe the hype – this one really lives up to its big reputation as a stunning and instantly iconic highlighter. The soft powder formula delivers a warm-toned golden glow that can build to a crazy blinding finish (without any chunky glitters). Anyone who prefers an icy shimmer might want to go for one of Becca’s other shades, but I love Champagne Pop for warming and perking up an otherwise dull look – if you haven’t tried this one out (or even swatched it), then make 2018 the year you do.
Ok, that’s the last of 2017 – onwards and upwards! I say that, but without a doubt these favourites (and then some) are coming with me on my beauty journey into 2018. Happy New Year, folks.
